From a material perspective, acupuncture needles are mainly divided into two categories: traditional metal needles and modern alloy needles. Traditional needles are mostly made of copper, iron, or silver, and are relatively soft and prone to oxidation. They are now mostly used for teaching demonstrations or specific cultural experiences. Modern mainstream acupuncture needles are primarily made of high-toughness stainless steel alloys, possessing excellent corrosion resistance, strength, and sharpness. They can be repeatedly sterilized and maintain stable performance, meeting the needs of high-frequency clinical use. Furthermore, disposable sterile needles generally use medical-grade stainless steel and are sterilized with ethylene oxide or irradiation, highlighting their hygiene and safety advantages.
In terms of structure and shape, the differences between acupuncture needles lie in the diameter, length, and tip shape of the needle body. Fine needles (0.16 mm to 0.20 mm in diameter) are suitable for sensitive areas such as the face, hands, and feet, or for patients with low pain tolerance; thicker needles (0.30 mm and above) are mostly used for deep stimulation of areas with abundant muscle or for conditions requiring a stronger needling sensation. Lengths range from 13 mm to 75 mm; short needles are suitable for shallow needling of the skin or acupoints in children, while long needles are used for deep acupoints on the trunk and certain special needling techniques. Needle tip shapes also differ; a micro-conical tip is common and suitable for general acupuncture, while an oval or flat-tipped tip can reduce insertion depth and enhance local stimulation in specific techniques.
Based on function, needles can be divided into ordinary filiform needles and special needles. Ordinary filiform needles are primarily used for regulating Qi and unblocking meridians and are the most widely used; special needles, such as long needles, intradermal needles, and press needles, each have their own characteristics in needle length, retention time, and stimulation methods. Long, thin needles can penetrate deeply and are often used for stubborn arthralgia or deep fascial lesions. Intradermal needles and press needles are small and have good fixation, suitable for prolonged retention for continuous, weak stimulation, and are commonly used for chronic diseases or preventative healthcare.
The methods of use also differ. Disposable needles emphasize single use and immediate replacement to prevent cross-infection; reusable needles require strict adherence to sterilization procedures and are suitable for situations with limited resources or where cost control is necessary. Some needles incorporate color coding or anti-slip textures in their handle design for quick identification of specifications and grip.
